Nails: OPI OZ Lights of Emerald City Review, Swatches, & Did I Get a Bad Bottle?

March 24, 2013 By StephanieLouise 494Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Fnails-opi-oz-lights-of-emerald-city.htmlNails%3A+OPI+OZ+Lights+of+Emerald+City+Review%2C+Swatches%2C+%26+Did+I+Get+a+Bad+Bottle%3F2013-03-24+14%3A19%3A00StephanieLouisehttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Fnails-opi-oz-lights-of-emerald-city-review-swatches-did-i-get-a-bad-bottle.html

Let me start out this post with I read all the Oz books & was super excited for this collection. When I first got the press release I was a bit shocked. This collection didn’t say Oz to me at all. Not only did it lean crazy neutral but there wasn’t a green in sight for either Emerald City or Theodora. I feel like the didn’t do it justice. I reviewed the Urban Decay Glinda & Theodora palettes & they were much better representations. I’m still disappointed but I did find one polish I really wanted from the beginning which is what I’ll be showing you today. I’m considering getting What Wizardry Is This? as well but for now Lights of Emerald City is what I have from this OPI collection.

OPI Lights of Emerald City- A clear base packed with shiny larger white squares & medium square iridescent glitters.

 photo DSCN6029_zpsad577e66.jpg

So it is really pretty right? This formula wasn’t great & I found placement a bit finicky. I really like the iridescent type glitters because they shift from gold to green to copper depending on their base. I prefer it over black but I figured I’d show it over a few brighter shades since it looks a bit more fun & that’s what I happened to be wearing.

So if I can deal with the formula goop then what’s my damage? These squares aren’t really squares….

 photo DSCN6039_zpsa6320a7e.jpg photo DSCN6037_zps53218b1e.jpg photo DSCN6036_zps0fe2d994.jpg
Now that you can see them up close can you tell that they aren’t quite cut right? & it isn’t just a few of them either, definitely most of them. My Revlon Heavenly didn’t have this issues & I picked it up for less than half the price. Worst of all, out of the 2 glitters, the white stands out a lot more so it looks pretty apparent to me that these squares are mutants. At first I thought I got a bad bottle…but no. The PolishAholic has swatches & her white squares look the same & so does Manicurette’s swatches on her post. I’m disappointed that they clearly had an issue across the board & sent it out anyway. Again, disappointed in the Oz collection from OPI. I’ll probably still wear it but it honestly makes me angry right now so I’m putting it up for awhile.

To see what my base colors are, see my post here about the Minx nails I tried & the CND/Gelish combo I’m wearing.

From the first release I knew I wanted OPI When Monkeys Fly! which turned out to be a complete curling mess. After seeing swatched I knew I wanted OPI Lights of Emerald City & now I’m so bummed with it although the iridescent glitter is really pretty.

Have you tried this polish? What did you think of the OPI Oz Collection? Do you think it embodies the film?

Ahhhh isn’t it summer yet? I normally never go for yellows but both Kerry & Darcy are calling my name! Maybe because we have flurries currently & it is terribly drab? Anyway! Tinsley looks similar to one of my all time favorite polishes, Spoiled in Shrimp on the Barbie, & I’m so excited to see it is full coverage because that one is way sheer! Rikki looks a bit similar to a polish I just got in today so I’m way excited to see it in person! Obviously Josie & Rocky are right up my alley…blue & green. Ah my comforts. & Yana (as close to my mom’s name Hana as we might ever get!) because Zoya does the most beautiful hot pinks.

Which shades are you most excited for? Ah I want the sun to come out right this very minute! These put me in such a good mood & I can’t wait to get my manicured hands on them!

Throwback Thursday: L’Oreal Colour Contrasts Creme Eyeshadow Duo in 302 Teal Fresco

March 21, 2013 By StephanieLouise 496Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Fthrowback-thursday-loreal-colour.htmlThrowback+Thursday%3A+L%27Oreal+Colour+Contrasts+Creme+Eyeshadow+Duo+in+302+Teal+Fresco2013-03-21+21%3A35%3A00StephanieLouisehttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Fthrowback-thursday-loreal-colour-contrasts-creme-eyeshadow-duo-in-302-teal-fresco.html

So when I asked you guys on twitter/facebook if you’d be interested in seeing some old school posts about makeup I used back in the day, you seemed genuinely interested. Good thing, because I’m a hoarder. You know on tv when they tell people “You need to get rid of this. I know it is a good memory but you have to let it go” or something like that? Well I held onto quite a few makeup products from back in the day & I’m excited to show you how I used them, what they looked like, & all that jazz. If you’re not interested in see my old makeup (as hip, & cool, & with it as I was back then) then feel free to check out any of my other hundreds of posts. I’ll be featuring products every Thursday for awhile so sit back & enjoy!

 photo DSCN5828_zpsc8992314.jpg

Why hello there one of the only creme eyeshadows I ever used in middle/high school that didn’t look crap on me! This was an absolutely favorite, of course the white site. You’ll see why when I break down the colors below but for now let us take a look back at the L’Oreal Colour Contrasts by Touch-On Colour which were very slim palettes containing two creme shadows & a mirror. I honestly have zip information on it as I don’t seem to be able to pull up any discontinued information or old info on them. I sure wish they had a date on them!

 photo DSCN5829_zpsdf9818eb.jpg

Why did I love this little duo so much? When I was younger & wanted a quick sweep of makeup I always used something shimmery. This shouldn’t be shocking to anyone right? Anyway, the white side was a frosted super sheer sparkling teal shimmer. These were much more mousse feeling than a creme & they dried to a light powder as long as you didn’t use too much. You can see below they weren’t super pigmented but that didn’t really matter to me!

 photo DSCN5836_zpsf4e9a305.jpg

The teal side is super cool toned & from far away almost looks like a light seafoam teal.

 photo DSCN5835_zpsde234b6f.jpg

The frosted white side (which has seen tons of love!) is a sheer frosty white with teal shimmer packed in. It really flashes in the light.

 photo DSCN5847_zps02308719.jpg
 photo DSCN5840_zpsa9f2b61d.jpg

Here are the easy swatches & you can see what I mean by sheer color. But aren’t they pretty? I still think I’d buy a creme product or base that looked like either of these! I like that the teal is super cool toned so that it can go with blues or greens whether they’re pastel or bright.

What do you think of these shades? They’re still perfectly creamy & gorgeous, way to stand the test of time! Did you have any of these duos? I’d LOVE to hear about them especially if they were different colors than Teal Fresco! Would you buy something similar to this now?

Influenster: Olay Fresh Effects Va-Va-Vivid Cleansing System Review

March 21, 2013 By StephanieLouise 497Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Finfluenster-olay-fresh-effects-va-va.htmlInfluenster%3A+Olay+Fresh+Effects+Va-Va-Vivid+Cleansing+System+Review2013-03-21+17%3A08%3A00StephanieLouisehttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Finfluenster-olay-fresh-effects-va-va-vivid-cleansing-system-review.html

 photo DSCN5183_zps801b27df.jpg

When I received the Olay Fresh Effects Va-Va-Vivid Cleansing System in my Influenster Sweethearts box awhile back I was quite excited. As much as I adore nail polish, am obsessed with eyeshadows, & seem to have an inhuman amount of lip products…I find myself becoming a bit of a skincare junkie. When my dear military husband found out he was being stationed in Nebraska I remember thinking, “Oh great, another climate for my skin to hate” because that is just the way I roll. Growing up in the perfect weather in Huntington Beach, CA I found I was quite spoiled. Then we moved to Arizona for a few years where for months it is over 100 degrees then Las Vegas, NV when I got married with a similar climate. My skin was fabulous there. Then we hit Nebraska where it snows, is humidly gross, & just all around an enemy to skin everywhere. Why does this matter?

Well, I shall tell you! The key to having healthy skin is to really clean it, treat it, then re-moisturize it. While a quick cleanse is nice it just doesn’t cut it for me anymore. if you followed my Clairisonic series then you know how happy I am with it. But what if you aren’t looking for a splurge? You could go for a facial brush or a rubber cleaner but they seem to be missing something. The shape isn’t quite right on the options I’ve tried. So why did Olay get it right? They went with a triangle of course.

 photo DSCN5189_zpsb590e878.jpg

 photo DSCN5192_zps0f7c723c.jpg

The size & shape of the Olay cleansing tool is genius. This is a very small brush compared to others I have tried & because it is a triangle it gets into the creases around your nose, hairline, & other facial areas with ease. The rubber bristles vibrate with a touch of the on switch. They don’t swirl or turn but actually vibrate. The rubber bristles (which I happen to prefer on a face brush usually) are fine so they don’t rub too harshly. They cleanse significantly & the entire power brush is easy to hold with an angle head.

 photo DSCN5184_zpsa9e101c3.jpg

For me the must have of this kit is the cleanser & when I use up a few bottles I have laying around I’ll be considering picking up a full size. You receive a 20 mL tube which is just enough to decide if I like it or not. I’m so glad I do! This smells like clean violets & I use it after removing my eye makeup. Although it is a shine minimizing cleanser, it didn’t leave my somewhat dry skin feeling tight at all. The Olay Fresh Effects Shine Shine Go Away Shine Minimizing Cleanser contains Kaolin clay which lifts away impurities & minimizes the shine. I really love this for my T-Zone especially!

All in all, if you’re looking to test out a new skincare cleansing routine this is a nice option. You can purchase the kits online from the Olay website www.olayfresheffects.com & from Amazon.

**This was sent as part of my Influenster Sweetheart box which I revealed here. This item was sent with no charge in hopes of review. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated.

My First Manicure in Over a Year, Gelish, CND, & Minx Nails! Oh My!

March 21, 2013 By StephanieLouise 498Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Fmy-first-manicure-in-over-year-gelish.htmlMy+First+Manicure+in+Over+a+Year%2C+Gelish%2C+CND%2C+%26+Minx+Nails%21+Oh+My%212013-03-21+13%3A37%3A00StephanieLouisehttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Fmy-first-manicure-in-over-a-year-gelish-cnd-minx-nails-oh-my.html

When it comes to manicures, I’m usually an at home kind of gal. My nails are always chipping (I type all day & play with cosmetics which warps my polish pretty bad!) plus I’m constantly changing shades. Whether I’m swatching for the blog or popping some new nail art onto my tips I’m constantly changing things up! But sometimes…I just need a break. I’ve been swatching so much lately that my poor nails needed a break. In stepped the wonderful Stacey at the I Salon & the generous samples from Minx. Keep reading to find out my thoughts!
“Minx is for a person who loves life and enjoys standing out from the crowd. We say that ‘Minx extends fashion to your fingertips,’ and in just a few years we’ve seen Minx become a fashion necessity. Our vision is that the fashion-conscious will not feel their ensemble is complete without their Minx. Minx is such a fun and fashionable product it is hard not to fall in love with the attention you get when wearing it, and if we felt that way, we knew millions of other women would, too!”

Minx products were completely new to me before a few weeks ago & with the nail design craze I was excited to see what made them different. Minx is a professional brand (as in they are to be professionally applied) & have been popping up at fashion shows, on celebrities, & in salons across the country. I’ve tried CND at events, lots of gel polishes at home, & tons of printed nail options so of course I was all in.

 photo 20130309_141544_zps504d7a65.jpg

Visiting Stacey at the I Salon in Omaha, Nebraska was an absolute pleasure. She was professional while still making me feel comfortable, like I was chatting like a friend. She specializes in Minx & other non-conventional manicure tools & techniques so she was a great choice! I’d had a few designs sent to her from Minx (although you would let your salon know beforehand & they’d order them under normal circumstances!) so we went about deciding what I was going to put on them!

 photo DSCN5724_zps8f9595d0.jpg
I opted for a new design called Leah Light Superstar in Silver & then went about picking other shades to complement the design. Although many Minx designs are fully opaque this one is clear so you can choose the color beneath. It has been so dreary here that we went with some nicely bright colors (would you expect anything demure from me?) from CND & Gelish which I’ll detail below.

 photo DSCN5741_zps67a1bab3.jpg
 photo DSCN5726_zps1e13600e.jpg photo DSCN5730_zpsd9d96658.jpg

Purple (shown in above photos)- Gelish Star Burst
Teal- CND Hotski to Tchotchke
Blue- Gelish Ooba Ooba Blue
Orange- Gelish Orange Cream Dream
Pink- Gelish Shake It Till You Samba

Stacey applied them with a starter base, color, then topcoat which were all cured under the UV light. Then she applies & trimmed the Minx & they kind of shrink up a bit on your nails under a light. For a bit of added staying power she added another top coat & cured it. Minx nails are meant to last up to 14 days but between baking, dog grooming, general cosmetic ridiculous-ness, & typing all day I found them starting to lift at the corners after about the 5 day mark. On the 7th day I peeled the stickers off (with no damage to the nails underneath at all with the gel manicure!) & went about enjoying my plain nails. I even did some swatches of OPI Lights of Emerald City over them so you’ll be seeing those soon!

 photo DSCN5941_zps9cb20583.jpg

I can honestly say if I wasn’t constantly changing my nails, my mind, & my stash around that I’d wear some form of gel or shellac year round. Stacey did an awesome job & I was so happy with everything about my nails. I finally had to soak them off today after a much needed swatching break because I have so much to show you guys! I definitely want to get them put on my toes though, I don’t change them hardly ever!

I recommend shellac & gel manicures to everyone already but I am really happy to have learned more about Minx. Although I don’t think it is as long wearing they have some amazing patterns & statement designs. Everything from holiday to mirrored metallics to fun patterns. Whether you’re a nail tech looking to amp up your salon with something new or a customer looking for special occasion or seriously fun nails, Minx could definitely be for you!

A huge thanks to Minx for allowing me to try out their design & of course Stacey for applying them & manicuring my poor nails for me! You can visit the Minx website to learn more & if you happen to be looking for a great manicure in the Omaha area, check out Stacey & contact her through her facebook page or her blog!

Nails: OPI Liquid Sand in Stay the Night Swatches & Review

March 20, 2013 By StephanieLouise 499Leave a Commenthttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Fnails-opi-liquid-sand-in-stay-night.htmlNails%3A+OPI+Liquid+Sand+in+Stay+the+Night+Swatches+%26+Review2013-03-20+13%3A49%3A00StephanieLouisehttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.allthingsbeautifulxo.com%2F2013%2F03%2Fnails-opi-liquid-sand-in-stay-the-night-swatches-review.html

 photo DSCN5446_zps33ceab9d.jpg

I’m really enjoying these new texture polishes but this one ranks up in my favorites. While some won’t like this at all I find it completely different from anything I own. Why? Because it looks like burning volcanic rock on my nails. Embers & blackened coal. It is quite a stunning site! I’ve also swatched the OPI Liquid Sand polish in Can’t Let Go & the Zoya Pixie Dust Collection which are also texture polishes.

 photo DSCN5440_zpse1b6b1a7.jpg
 photo no_zpsc79b3f81.jpg

OPI Liquid Sand in Stay the Night- A black base with faded red/pink small glitters. They remain shiny so they are visible. This has a “Liquid Sand” finish which means it dries matte, textured, & glittery.

I bought this at ULTA after trying out one of my minis in an OPI set. I adored the fire ember effect & it is just too much fun. I think it is just so different from any of the other texture polishes so it is a bit special. I’d love to see a line for textured seasons or elements!

What do you think of this polish? Are you loving or leaving the nail polishes coming out lately with texture finishes?

I think it is safe to say I’ve hd some tanning disasters. I grew up in Huntington Beach, CA where tanning was just a part of my life. We lived half a mile from the beach so I don’t think it is too shocking that you would find us at the beach in the sun. No spf in site. After some family cancer scares, my very fair mother getting very angry at me, & just general research I turned to self tanners.

Naturally, I am quite fair & fine with it through winter. My arms & back will tan a bit in warmer weather from the sunlight but other than that I’m pretty starkly white. My legs are so white that almost every self tanner looks bright orange for months! That is so not the spring look that is in fashion! There is also the smudging issue, discoloration, & then the time I had a self tanner that flaked off making me look like a reptile. All over my body. It was gross. & the week I had a girlfriends beach party. Oddly enough, turtlenecks weren’t acceptable attire!

This is a full coverage powder with hydrating ingredients like silk, peptides, grapeseed, rose, aloe, & more! Even with my terribly dry skin currently I can tell this will be excellent this summer. Tightline Full Lash Length Black Primer Skinny Wand

I can’t wait to do a full review of this product because I think many of you will say “Wow! Exactly what I need!” much like I did. This is a new products from it Cosmetics & it let me coat absolutely every lash starting at the very root. I’m blonde so this is life changing…it is SO hard to do! This leaves my lashes so long & gorgeous!

Hello Lashes 5-in-1 Mascara

This is meant to be a highly volumizing mascara & has a spiky ball on the end to coat every lash. I really like the feel of the handle which is cushioned & the wand is unique.

My favorite of this set! Gorgeous, practical, & absolutely a welcomed new product! This can be applied to lips & cheeks & although it appears clear, it is a self adjusting pink that gives the most gorgeous glow on my cheeks! We’re about to enter into kind of a touchy subject for me so steady as we go. Once upon a time, Olay used to make cosmetics on their own. Now they have partnered with Covergirl (with some truly superb products) but they used to be stand alone as well. & I loved them. For some reason, these were some of the first drugstore cosmetics that I bought which I considered grown up. These were some of my first my lips but better shades & I think my first orange-red lipstick that didn’t look crap on me. I was pretty proud of these. I’m going to place these in my 8th-10th grade region of history. & they were a very big deal.

With sleek black packaging & grown up shades (by grown up I mean not glittery, blue, or overly sparkly) they hold some fond memories. Besides the lipliner, I’d wear all of these shades today happily. The lipliner…oh man was that 80s or what? A frosted pale pink, just kill me. Anyway, these cosmetics were discontinued in 2001. You can still get some off ebay (though I wouldn’t recommend it although mine have held up wonderfully apparently) & other sites online. This line bit the dust before its time in my opinion.

The two lipsticks are from the same line but they don’t have much information on the packaging. Left is Olay Color Moist SPF 15 Lipstick in Heather 290 & on the right is Aubergine 280. They are moisturizing, well pigmented, & made me so sad that they’re gone. Look at the promise in these lipsticks! They’re lovely!

We have another lipstick & a lipliner to round out my Olay Cosmetics throwback. The lipliner is called the Olay Color Moist Lip Definer in the shade 180 Pink Lemonade. It has the black pencil which is a lot more common now than back then. Ahead of its time there. Unfortunately I wasn’t ahead of mine when I picked up a super frosted fair pink…but I think most of us have been there. The other lipstick is a beauty & still looks quite luxe. This lipstick is the Olay Total Effects SPF 15 Lipstick in Flame 420. This actually looks a lot redder on the lips but it leaves behind a nice orange stain. I still love this lipstick & it has a rich, perfect formula.

You can see from the swatches that all of these products have remained in pretty great condition & are easily still moisturizing. Notice all 3 of the lipsticks contain SPF, something I’d expect from Olay. Left to right we have Olay Color Moist SPF 15 Lipstick in Heather 290, Olay Color Moist SPF 15 Lipstick in Aubergine 280, Olay Total Effects SPF 15 Lipstick in Flame 420, & Olay Color Moist Lip Definer in the shade 180 Pink Lemonade.

With some research, it seems the Procter & Gamble Oil of Olay cosmetics line began in 1993 & ended in 2001. What a shame. I have heard some great things about the mascaras in this line (which to my knowledge I’ve never tried) & I own one forest green eyeliner from the line that I liked.

This Throwback Thursday has a note of sadness to it. What a shame this line didn’t get to thrive much as it had a great formula to these lippies at least. I’m sure it isn’t the only thing they did right. What do you think of these products? Did you ever to to try items from the Oil of Olay cosmetics line?

So in case you missed my Glossybox US unboxing video (you’ll always see Glossybox on Youtube first because afterwards I review it here!) then you aren’t aware of the randomness. This is the February Glossybox which arrived kind of late but I liked it all the same. You’ll see some brands you recognize, some full sized products, & some snail slime. Why yes, you did read that right!

As usual, Glossybox includes the theme, products, & more information on their card. I love this layout & it feels well thought out. They also include a Glossymag with photos & tid bits about beauty & trends.

Below you’ll find my thoughts on each product! To see my unboxing & first impressions, check out my youtube channel & subscribe!

Bvlgari Eau Parfumee Au The Blanc Soap- This is a nice sized soap sample & smells of the fragrance of Eau Parfumee Au The Blanc. This is 1.76 oz & a full size is 5.3 oz & retails for $30. This has a nice scent & lathers well. It was nice to add into my soap rotation but it isn’t something I’ll be running out to purchase.

Da Vinci Cosmetics Shimmer Powder in Champagne- This is a full size sample of a shimmering eyeshadow. I personally would have preferred something a bit more daring shade wise but I can see this appealing to a lot of people. This is a lovely beige/champagne & it applied rather sheer. I can foil it for a denser application. It says you can use it as a highlighter on the cheeks but I think it is way too shimmery for that! A full size is $15.

Lisi Sheer Sparkle Lip Gloss in Battery Park- This gloss is available at a NY beauty boutique but unfortunately it didn’t blow me away. For one thing this gloss is so sheer that I might as well use a clear gloss with gold shimmer. It also boasts a “delectable scent” but I don’t smell anything but your average lipgloss in mine! Maybe I got a dud? This is a full size & it retails for $7 for .31 oz.

Missha Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Hydro Gel Mask- If you saw my unboxing video then you probably know how I feel about this sample! This is a full sized mask which retails for $6. Why haven’t I tried it? Well…I just can’t bring myself to put snail slime on my face. It says it is an Asian beauty secret that moisturizes, soothes, regenerates your skin, & is known to reverse skin damage with natural healing powers. I love you guys & you mean the world to me but I seriously don’t think I’m going to put snail slime on my face…& yes snail slime extract is in the ingredients list.

Nail Rock Nail Wraps in the design Metallic Stripe- I have shown these on the blog before & really love the idea of an easy to apply & use nail design at home. This design has black, silver, & gold metallic stripes & I love them! This is a full size & retails for $8 a pack for a full set.

All in all, a nice Glossybox! A lot of full sizes too! For $21 a month the Glossyboxes have been a nice value for me personally & this one was no different.
